New Aadhaar-Like IDs for Farmers from October 2024

The government will start registering farmers with a unique ID system from October. This new ID, similar to Aadhaar, aims to digitize the agriculture sector. Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi announced this plan at the Outlook Agri-Tech Summit and Swaraj Awards. 

Target and Funding

The goal is to register 5 crore farmers by March next year. This effort is part of the Rs 2,817-crore Digital Agriculture Mission approved by the Cabinet. Registration will begin in the first week of October, and guidelines will be available soon. 
A pilot project was tested in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and 19 states are already involved. Once the farmers' registry is created, each registered farmer will receive an "Aadhaar-like unique ID." 

Benefits of the New ID

While addressing the challenges, Chaturvedi said, "Presently, farmers have to go through verification every time they apply for any agri schemes. It involves not only costs but also some face harassment. To address this issue, we are going to create a farmers' registry."

The ID will cut down on multiple verifications while applying for these schemes, including the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and Kisan Credit Card programme," said Chaturvedi, thereby saving precious time and reducing hassles. The new system would also help the government better plan policies and contact them for specific services.

Currently, government data only includes information on land and crops but lacks details about individual farmers. The new registry is to fill this gap. Chaturvedi also appealed to the farmers, scientists, and companies to spread the word among them about this registration process. Camps will be organised across the country for the registration drive. 

Other tech solutions the government is working on include a Kisan AI-based chatbox system to further support farmers.
